KAREN'S LIST
My sister Karen lived for four months right in the same neighborhood
as our hotels in the 5th and 6th, and here are her recommendations:
A list of restaurants we've enjoyed during our stay in Paris in autumn 2001...
Most are neighborhood restaurants, convenient to our location on the border
of the 5th and 6th arrondisements. Almost all of them are described in one edition
or another of Patricia Wells' Food Lover's Guide to Paris -- definitely our
food bible.
Belgian
Bouillon Racine
3 rue Racine
75006 Paris
01 44 32 15 60
Upstairs, wonderful Belgian food in a turn of the century
decor
Downstairs, less emphasis on Belgian dishes, more casual
dining. Great beer throughout.
Various French
Bistrot .... côté Mer
16 bd Saint Germain (near Cardinal LeMoine metro)
75005 Paris
01 43 54 59 10
Excellent seafood. The chef is the daughter of Michel Rostang.
Decor is simple -- small room. We thought the desserts weren't as great as the
rest of the meal, but over all had a great experience. Carte :
entrées from 8 to 9 Euros
main courses from 16 to 19 Euros
desserts are 8 Euros
La Table d'Aude
8 rue de Vaugirard
75006 Paris
01 43 26 36 36
Extremely friendly owners, rightly proud of the delicious
food of their region in the southwest of France. We adore their cassoulet.
Chez Maître Paul
12 rue Monsieur le Prince
75006 Paris
01 43 54 74 59
Hearty food from the Savoie. 170 franc menu
Brasserie Balzar
49 rue des Ecoles
75005 Paris
01 43 54 13 67
Perfect spot for a traditional Parisian meal. Restaurant
made famous to Americans by Adam Gopnik's book Paris to the Moon , though, so
some days there are lots of Americans dining there.
Brasserie les Fontaines
9 rue Soufflot
75005 Paris
01 43 26 42 80
Our meal here was delicious and the flavorings unusual. Much
more interesting than a run-of-the mill neighborhood place.
Baracane Bistrot de L'Oulette
38 rue des Tournelles
75004 Paris
01 42 71 43 33
Only one block east of the Place des Vosges, we had a delicious
lunch here. The set price lunch menus are very reasonable (88 francs for 3 courses).
Really great clafoutis for dessert.
Italian:
Santa Lucia
22 rue des Cannettes
75006 Paris
01 43 26 42 68
Very nice Italian with good atmosphere. Always crowded.
Excellent pizza. Good location between St. Sulpice and St. Germain des Prés.
Couscous:
Le Boutegrill, chez Hamadi
12 rue Boutebrie
75005 Paris
We've been going to this inexpensive Tunisian couscous place
for years. Seems to be the most popular in a street devoted to cheap couscous
places. I think their daily special tagines are much better than the couscous
on the menu. Order a tagine and some semoule (couscous grains) on the side.
La Table de Fes
5 rue Sainte-Beuve
75006 Paris
01 45 48 07 22
The best couscous we've ever had, and quite a bit more expensive
than Hamadi (above). The Moroccan owner knows what you want.
Restaurant de la Mosquée
39 rue Geoffroy Saint Hilaire
75005 Paris
01 43 31 53 30
Beautiful suroundings, good food. A nice family place, with
big round tables allowing you to eat your couscous family style. A great place
to go after visiting the Museum of Natural History/Evolution. Would also be
excellent (and a lot cheaper) for tea.
Asian:
Nouvelle Couronne Thai
7 rue Jules Chaplain
]75006 Paris
01 43 54 29 88
Excellent Thai food, fairly upmarket, but bustling and unpretentious.
Le Palanquin
12 rue Princesse
75006 Paris
01 43 29 77 66
Excellent Vietnamese food in very pretty, cosy surroundings
Tashi Delek
4 rue des Fossés Saint Jacques
75005 Paris
01 43 26 55 55
Tibetan, and very inexpensive. My sister and I had lunch
here. The food was very tasty, but we chose the menu at lunch. We would have
had much more interesting food by ordering à la carte, based on
what we saw around us.
Japotori
41 rue Monsieur le Prince
75006 Paris
01 43 29 00 54
One of many Japanese restaurants on this street. We were
very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and the low prices. They
specialize in brochettes and the set meal prices are determined by how many
brochettes you order. The sushi starter was good, too.
Outside the city:
Restaurant Fournaise
Ile des Impressionnistes
78400 Chatou
01 30 71 41 91
This restaurant is the restaurant depicted by Renoir in the
Luncheon of the Boating Party. The building has been restored, with a museum
inside, and the restaurant reopened. We had a great meal -- the food was really
quite good considering the touristic location -- and the experience is wonderful
for anyone interested in recreating the impressionist experience. We plan to
return in summer when the terrace is open.
Auberge Ravoux
8 rue de la Sansonne
Auvers
01 34 48 05 47
This is the auberge where Van Gogh spent his last months.
There is now a museum in back and one can apparently visit Van Gogh's room upstairs.
We had a very good meal here. It's the sort of place where they bring you the
platter of food and you serve yourself. As at Fournaise, the atmosphere is excellent,
although I imagine it is pretty crowded and touristy in summertime.
Restaurant Le Volcan--10 rue Thoun, 5th, 01 46 33 38 33
Le Suffren--84 av Suffren, 15e, M° La Motte Picquet-Grenelle, tel: 01 45 66 97 86, open daily--near Eiffel Tower
Chez Omar --47. Rue de Bretagne, Paris
3ieme. Closed Sunday noon. Métro: Arts et Métiers. InfoTel.: 01
42 72 36 36 ---beautiful resto to have a couscous (once a favorite of former
Prime Minister Jospin)
